Why is it important?
Provides insights into life history characteristics of a species that is underutilized in this system. Contributes to the variation of the species across their natural range.
Perspectives
Channel catfish do not grow overly large in the Ottawa River, Canada and therefore do not attract the trophy angler as they do in the Rouge River, Manitoba or so southerly populations. Nobody was really interested in this population yet they were so abundant within the system undoubtedly influencing community structure. Additionally, insights into the potential anthropogenic effects on channel catfish can be gleaned from this study and subsequent publication which can be applied to other populations.
