What is it about?

This particular agent leads to step-like increases in death and medical admissions which endure for 12 months before abating. The 12-month duration partly arises from a seeming time cascade of medical conditions. This is a very novel type of new infectious agent.

Why is it important?

Exactly the same behavior has been characterized in Berkshire and North East Essex. In all cases hospital services are overwhelmed by the sudden and unexpected onset of these outbreaks.

Perspectives

This study is part of a wider series characterizing the impact of these outbreaks on both deaths and medical admissions in the UK and elsewhere in the world, see http://www.hcaf.biz/2010/Publications_Full.pdf
