What is it about?

Since 2000 there have been outbreaks of an infectious agent across the UK at roughly 2-year intervals. This study looked at the small-area spread of the agent in NE Essex and the resulting increase in medical admissions. GP surgeries may have unknowingly acted as loci to spread this agent.

Why is it important?

This is a new type of infectious outbreak which needs to be understood. The mode of action appears to be via immune manipulation rather than overt infection.
