What is it about?

A total of 131 dental implants were placed in edentulous areas. Before surgery, keratinized gingiva was measured with a periodontal probe. A palatal/lingual incision was made in mesiodistal direction. The flap was raised with the residual keratinized tissue ad the implant was placed. Afterwards, the flap was apically repositioned and secured with periosteal sutures. Folow up at 6 months, 1, 2, 3 and 4 years was scheduled

Why is it important?

At 4 years, survival rate was 87, 79%. Clinical gain of keratinized gingiva around the implants occurred in all cases. At 1 years, mean levels were 7.26 mm while at 4 years they were 7.36 mm, meaning tissue stability over time

Perspectives

A specific surgical approach is essential to gain keratinized gingiva in implant dentistry. Here you can find a flap design thought to be easily practiced on patients and that gives optimal clinical outcome
