What is it about?
We demonstrate that nano indentation can be used to explore the elastic stress states in polymers (in this case a polymer often formed through injection molding) by examining the material that piles up around an indentation impression. We use applied stresses to impose the stress state, and then compare the way pile up changes in this polymeric material with different stress magnitudes.

Why is it important?
Residual stresses in many materials are problematic in terms of materials reliability. If you are assessing the hardness anyways, if you could back out the stress at the same time you'd have a better idea of the likelihood of subsequent fracture problems.
