What is it about?
We mesure the hardness of metals to understand the strength of these material without the need for machining complex samples. Why is there a variation in this property within a given material, and is the variation tied to the volume we're sampling?

Why is it important?
Demonstrating that variation in mechanical response of metals, not just averages, tracks with microstructure variations is key to moving towards the ability to validate models, and to provide models the real range of properties which must be captured as modeling moves towards prediction.
