What is it about?

This study compiles all the existing information about the ichthyofauna of the Ucayali River basin. This basin holds great ichthyological importance, hosting one of the most diverse fish populations in Peru and South America. Additionally, it is currently facing numerous anthropogenic impacts that increase the risk for many fish species inhabiting the area. Here, data from scientific articles, internal reports, specimens collected in scientific collections, and field surveys are presented, many of which were funded by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

Why is it important?

This represents the first comprehensive list of fishes for one of the main river basins in Peru. It includes comments on the different issues encountered with each species, such as taxonomic problems, doubtful synonyms, species in need of redescriptions, endemic species, among other aspects. Many of these issues could serve as potential thesis topics or research projects.

Perspectives

Indeed, the information presented in this study holds great value for students seeking research topics and for authorities aiming to propose management and conservation initiatives. The scarcity of species lists for river basins in Peru makes this data particularly significant, as it helps fill the gaps in knowledge about the ichthyofauna of the region. By providing a comprehensive list of fishes and highlighting specific issues and potential research topics, this study paves the way for further exploration, understanding, and protection of the aquatic biodiversity in the basin. With this valuable resource at hand, researchers, students, and decision-makers can collaborate in enhancing conservation efforts and ensuring the sustainable management of the region's aquatic ecosystems.
