What is it about?

This review summarizes the molecular mechanisms by which DHEA acts in cells and animal models with a focus on the “novel” and physiological modes of DHEA action.

Why is it important?

DHEA is a precursor for the synthesis of androgens, including testosterone (T) and 5-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and also binds nuclear and membrane receptors. Here we review the biological action of DHEA.

Perspectives

This review includes Tables summarizing DHEA interaction with a number of receptors and summarizes the biological action of DHEA and its metabolites on hepatic metabolism including induction of the enzymes involved in foreign compound metabolism.

Carolyn Klinge

The article explores new receptors for which DHEA serves as a ligand and introduces micro RNA's as downstream targets for the sterol.
