What is it about?

This study is the result of a collaboration among 10 countries to collect >3100 patients with acromegaly, a rare disease caused by excess growth hormone secretion. It is the largest study ever published on this very rare disease.

Why is it important?

Apart from being the largest study ever published on acromegaly, it shows important trends including slower diagnosis in women who make up the majority of patients. Also, a number of subtypes of acromegaly appear to be present: aggressive disease in younger (male) patients and a milder disease in an older subgroup.

Perspectives

This study shows the power of collaboration in rare disease research, by harnessing database designs to standardize and facilitate data capture and analysis.
