What is it about?

The authors discuss the impact of a 2-year pilot project, in which a hierarchical mentoring model was implemented as part of a first-year experience course for biology students (BioSkills). The findings indicate that the BioSkills course was a successful first-year intervention. First-time in college (FTIC) students who participated in BioSkills earned significantly higher first-year GPAs and were retained at higher rates than students who did not participate. The authors describe the mentoring structure used and explain how the course design supports and educates future biology professionals.
