What is it about?
In this review the structural description of modulated molecular compounds is discussed based on several examples. The higher-dimensional superspace approach servers as elegant tool to exactly describe and analyse such modulated molecular compounds.

Why is it important?
A short introduction is given to the higher-dimensional superspace approach, in which periodicity is recovered in higher dimensions. As "crystallography" is based on lattice translation, those (in three-dimensional space) aperiodic structures can be handled in superspace as perioic structures.
