What is it about?

α-aminophosphonates of the formula R1NH–CH(R)–P(O)(OiPr)2, are very versatile ligands in coordination chemistry. We have synthesised a series of new derivatives containing substituted phenyl and pyridine groups R and R1. They were characterised using IR, 1H, 31P spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Crystal and molecular structures of three α-aminophosphonates p-XC6H4–NH–CH(p-XC6H4)–P(O)(OiPr)2 (X = H, Br, CH3O) were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Why is it important?

α-aminophosphonates contain a huge amount of functional groups. They might be used in supramolecular chemistry, in coordination chemistry and Lewis acid catalysis. We describe the synthesis of many derivatives in detail in this paper allowing thus to tailor the electronic and steric properties of these molecules.

Perspectives

This is plain chemistry: synthesis and characterisation of interesting molecules with no "potential applications" and "saving the world" attitude.
