Key Measurements for Garment Construction are Missing from 3D Body Scanning Systems!

Despite 3D Body Scanning being over 20 years old, this publication is the first report proving key measurements used for garment construction are missing from the technology's software. While 3D Body Scanning is held as a precise tool for Virtual Tailoring (or Mass Customisation) this paper highlights critical weaknesses preventing the technology being relevant to the fashion industry. As an exemplary piece of work I am proud to put my name as co-author and welcome the academic discussions it shall start. This paper provides exemplary insight into the current state of online virtual fit, exposing current challenges and future directions for the technology. As a pioneering study, this paper is the first academic assessment of Virtual Fit from the perspectives of 3D Body Scanning, User Preference, and Anthropometric/ Ergonomic Theory. This research opens new paranyms through the issues addressed within these pages, which shall direct multiple studies academia and industry needs now more than ever.
