What is it about?
Cyclic loading can cause material failure even at relatively low loads. Material fatigue is the reason, and testing of this material property is very important for safe design of mechanically loaded components. Accelerated testing is possible by increasing the testing frequency to the ultrasonic range. A high accuracy equipment for ultrasonic fatigue testing of materials is described and used to study a high strength aluminium alloy and additively manufactured stainless steel.

Why is it important?
Fatigue of materials is a statistical process. Many specimen have to be tested with high numbers of load cycles to characterize their fatigue strength. This leads to long testing times and high costs. Time and cost can be saved with the described high frequency testing method.
