What is it about?

A laboratory-scale apparatus was fabricated and used to simulate the gas migration in a cemented annulus. The so-called Modified Wellbore Simulation Chamber (MWSC) has the capability to simulate gas migration under a wide range of representative borehole conditions. In addition, the MWSC is equipped with a Gas Flow Indicator, which makes it possible to accurately identify the onset and the termination of the time period that a cemented annulus is vulnerable to gas migration.

Why is it important?

Gas migration into and along cemented wellbore annuli has been recognized as both safety and environmental risks for the gas and oil industries. The problem becomes most severe when formation gas is able to enter the wellbore annulus and travel vertically, potentially migrating to nearby freshwater aquifers.

Perspectives

We hope this novel apparatus be used along with other widely used methods to improve our understanding of the key parameters that control the vulnerability of a cemented annulus to gas migration.
