What is it about?

Nanoindentation not only provides modulus of elasticity and hardness information but it can also be used to obtain the residual stress, and fracture toughness information. We studied three different armor steels Ramor 500, Ramor 550 and Armox Advance.

Why is it important?

It is one of the few studies available in the literature that aims to investigate the mechanical properties of armor steels via nanoindentation technique. The results are compared with the ones obtained with the conventional methods. In this respect, the current study is one of the most comprehensive studies on the mechanical properties of armor steels.

Perspectives

Nanoindentation offers variety of advantages including less cumbersome sample preparation, application of very small loads that produce indents on different phases/constituents in the microstructure that yields properties for each matter yet there are some requirements and conditions that need to be observed and/or satisfied with the nanoindentation.
