What is it about?

The study aimed at understanding the efficacy of different bond strength parameters obtained from conventional approach (i.e., indirect tensile strength test) and advanced approaches (i.e., binder bond strength and surface free energy) to evaluate performance of hot-mix asphalt against moisture damage.

Why is it important?

It is important to understand that energy ratio parameter based on surface free energy (SFE) approach may not always provide the best moisture resistant aggregate-bitumen combination. However, it was found that parameters (ER and physiochemical parameter related to aggregate, bitumen and water) obtained from SFE approach may be helpful for the forensic investigation of moisture damage surface.

Perspectives

The study highlights the importance of understanding the different parameters based on surface free energy (SFE) approach to evaluate moisture damage in bituminous mixes. In fact, comparative study with other parameters, for example, tensile strength ratio and binder bond strength ratio reflects that frequently used energy ratio parameter based on SFE approach may not always provide the best aggregate-bitumen combination resistant to moisture damage.
