What is it about?

Metformin is a widely used antidiabetic drug and it is capable of inducing MALA (Metformin Associated Lactic Acidosis) in higher plasma concentrations.

Why is it important?

Metformin is a cationic drug and it depends the transporters like OCTs and MATEs of renal cells for it's elimination. Concomitant use of Metformin with the drugs inhibiting MATEs and OCTs may result in elevated plasma concentrations of Metformin and increased risk of MALA.
