Pharmacologic treatment options for advanced epithelial skin cancer

What is it about?

Advanced epithelial skin cancers include basal and squamous cell carcinomas that cannot be removed surgically or treated with conventional treatment options such as radiotherapy or topical therapies. These tumors ,although rare, are the cause of serious mobidity for the small group of patients that they affect. This review explores the old and new pharmacologic therapeutic options. The new targeted therapies are explored in depth. Efficacy, adverse events and drug tolerance mechanisms are few of the areas explored.

Why is it important?

New targeted therapies for epithelial skin cancers have emerged during the last few years. Advanced epithelial skin cancers are rare but also very difficult to manage. It is important for dermatologists and oncologists to be up to date when it comes to new therapeutic options and ongoing clinical trials.
