The article investigates how positive minimal responses are received in standardized interviewing. The data were videotaped, transcribed, and analyzed with conversation analysis. The responses were delivered by the unemployed or elderly retirees.

Why is it important?

It is not exactly known how interviewers deal with positive minimal responses when using a questionnaire with several answer options. According to the analysis, the interviewees answering with positive minimal responses are treated differently depending on their social identity.

Perspectives

The interviewer’s inference after a positive minimal response may influence the validity and reliability of standardized interviewing.
