What is it about?
The utilization of organic and/or inorganic fillers in a polymeric matrix, especially for hydrocarbons separation and recovery, is rather new and has not been extensively studied. In this review, it is demonstrated as a promising technology to separate and recover valuable hydrocarbons (i.e. hydrocarbons with more than two carbons) for utilization in the petrochemical and chemical industries. To the best of our knowledge, the progress made on the exploitation of MMMs in this separation class has not been reported as the majority of published reviews about MMMs have been devoted to the natural gas and air separation.

Why is it important?
The main goal of this review is to present various fillers utilized for hydrocarbons separation and their effects on the separation performance of the resultant membranes. Moreover, challenging issues affecting the fabrication of Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are investigated.
