What is it about?

The abstracts deal with influences of the immune system on biochemical pathways which are of great relevance in the pathogenesis of symptoms in various diseases. Thereby metabolisms of essential amino acids tryptophan and phenylalanine are in the front row.

Why is it important?

Derprivation of tryptophan is a strategy of the immune system to inhibit growth of pathogens and tumor cells. However, side effects especially in chronic conditions comprise neuropsychiatric abnormalities like disturbances of mood and congnition. Antioxidant compounds are able to interfere with immune system activation, which can be of benefit for patients. However, when overdosed, e.g., by supplementation they are likely to controbute to allergic disease and asthma.

Perspectives

The interactions between nutrition (e.g., excessive exposure to antioxidants), physical exercise (burning of excess antioxidants), regulation of immune response by redox active compounds, and their influence on neurobiochemical pathways will provide better understanding of environmental immunotoxicology and also new treatment strategies can be developed.
