What is it about?
Global warming have impact on the thickness and duration of ice/snow cover and in consequence ecosystem structure and functioning. In this paper physical, chemical and biological parameters were studied in three eutrophic lakes of different morphometry.

Why is it important?
Our results indicate that pelagic organisms, despite unfavorable living conditions, can reach high abundances under the ice-covered period. They show high variability over the short time scale, suggesting that winter is a very dynamic period. Protists, phytoplankton and zooplankton are strongly dependent on each other
