What is it about?
Seven accessions of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were crossed in diallel fashion. Data were recorded on days to maturity, plant height, stem diameter, head diameter, number of leaves, achene per head, achene yield per plant, 100-achene weight, filled achene percentage and oil contents. The recorded data were subjected to statistical analyses to determine the extent of genetic variability among the accessions and combining abilities.

Why is it important?
Breeding for seed yield involves selecting plants, and then the inbred lines bred from them, for their “combining ability” that is their ability to give hybrids with good seed yield. In sunflower the evaluation of genotypes for combining ability is important determining suitable genotypes to build up competently in breeding programs for main yield characters.
