What is it about?

This paper analyses discourse functions of topicalization in three Asian varieties of English. Topicalization occurs in sentences such as "The first novel I read, but the second one I didn't read". This structure is used to emphasise, create contrast, establish continuity in the discourse, and shift the current topic. The last function is particularly rare; all other functions can be identified to some extent.
