What is it about?
Over 3% of asthmatic patients suffer from a particularly severe form of the disease (“severe asthma”, SA) which is often refractory to usual treatment. Airway remodeling, which is a cardinal feature of SA and currently thought to be the main mechanism triggering fixed airway obstruction, seems to be a key factor affecting a patient’s outcome. Reproducible, reliable biomarkers of airway and/or lung parenchymal remodeling would greatly aid physicians to identify and manage SA patients.
