Isolation and identification of fungi from hypersaline Inland sea in Qatar

Why is it important?
The isolation of filamentous fungi from habitats such hypersaline marine environments, can help in the determination of their biological diversity and their ability to survive under adverse conditions. This knowledge may improve our understanding of the distribution of these microorganisms and their interactions with their ecosystems. Many of the fungi found in this study may serve as potential indicators in biotechnological processes and screening of these fungi to produce specific enzymes applicable in the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries could prove to be beneficial.
Perspectives
This is the first report highlighting the isolation of fungi from the hypersaline marine environment in Qatar. The authors would like to thank Qatar Foundation for providing the financial support to carry out this study.
