What is it about?

The paper presents a two-step procedure for the design of a disturbance observer for linear, time-invariant systems. It is assumed that the observer feedback for the observer without disturbance model is already available. It is shown how, based on this, the feedback coefficients for the disturbance observer can be determined using simple closed-form solutions.

Why is it important?

The described method increases the clarity regarding the influence of the disturbance model on the observer feedback coefficients and is also more computationally efficient for models with low system order.

Perspectives

According to the duality principle, the presented method corresponds to the two-step method in PI state controller design when a P state controller already exists.
