What is it about?

Libraries collect a lot of data on how their collection, services and programmes are performing but what do they do with that information? This study explores how data from evaluation and monitoring is used to make decisions in the short and longer term and how it is used to raise the profile of the library among funders and users.

Why is it important?

A lot of the focus on evaluation in the public library sector has focused on the importance of collecting data and how to gather evidence of library performance and impact. There has been little attention to date focused on how that data is used.

Perspectives

This article made me think about the vast amounts of information and data collected by public libraries and what happens to it. Are libraries making the best use of the monitoring and evaluation data to demonstrate the value they have for their communities?
