What is it about?
This paper analyses how the pronominal address is used to characterise fictional relationships in the eight German translations of Jane Austen’s novel Emma. They are compared with original German literature written around 1815, the year when the English novel was first published.

Why is it important?
Only very few papers deal exclusively with the translation of you into German and show how the choice of the pronominal address affects the depiction of relationships.
Perspectives
In general, translators use the pronominal address less frequently to highlight special relationships like close friendships or romantic love than the authors of original German literature. If more papers dealt with this topic, translators would develop a greater awareness of the importance of pronouns of address.
