What is it about?
Hard boiled crime fiction s a masculinist genre with limited roles for women but its tropes have been appropriated by feminist crime fiction. This article analyses to what extent this is successful and how the tropes are adopted, adapted or subverted. The article then analyses what changes are introduced in translation from American English to German.

Why is it important?
The translation of crime fiction is a research area which has generated interest in the last few years. This article contributes to this focusing on translation of tropes and to what extent cultural expectations in the target language impact on how the feminist attributes in Sara Paretsky's Indemnity Only work in its German translation.
