What is it about?
Emotional distress, including post-traumatic stress disorder, is common among surrogate decision makers for patients with chronic critical illness (CCI). After performing a secondary analysis of the largest completed randomized controlled trial of CCI patients and surrogates to date, we found that high anxiety and depression scores and patient unresponsiveness on or near day 10 of mechanical ventilation are risk factors for surrogate PTSD symptoms at 90 days.
