What is it about?

#CausalEffect of timing of #HipFracture surgery on inhospital mortality: difference in no. of deaths if all patients were to have early surgery, and then if the same patients were to undergo delayed surgery.

Why is it important?

We project an extra 11 inhospital deaths per 1000 surgeries if #HipFracture repair is performed after 3 inpatient days, rather than on the day of admission. 17% of deaths are attributable to delays beyond 2 days.

Perspectives

CMAJ publishes our study on timing alternatives for #HipFracture surgery. We offer two new estimates: projected mortality and attributable deaths. Timelier surgery could prevent 16.5% of hospital deaths currently occurring among patients who wait more than two days for hip fracture repair. The sun should not set twice before #hipfracture repair.
