What is it about?

Unusual ingredients is a multi-sensory collective bringing to life the relationships between sound and flavour. We outline our creative approaches to combining food and music, based on crossmodal correspondences between different sensory modalities. We argue that new relationships can be invented between domains by examining the possible sensory stimulations affords within each, and that music can play a special role in framing and enabling such multi-sensory encounters.

Why is it important?

Our work contributes towards the growing field of multi-sensory research into food perception. Significantly, we show how many different types of connection between food and sound can be used together to create engaging and impactful new work. Establishing novel design strategies to enhance food perception has important implications for sustainability, and health and well-being.
