What is it about?
This article looks at what happened to musicians' social relationships during COVID lockdowns. Through interviews we found musicians lost many close social networks, but started connecting more broadly through the internet. We also propose 'Crystal Capital' as a new theory to understand these online relationships.

Why is it important?
This is the first study to explore how community musicians experienced COVID lockdowns at a personal and social level. Not only does it offer important insight into the impact of lockdowns on musical communities, but it also offers a unique exploration of music-mediated social interaction in online settings. Finally, it provides a new theoretical concept, and language, to explain social engagement in the context of online musical participation.
Perspectives
This article looks at both the positives and negatives of the 'digital pivot' towards online music provision and engagement.
