Skills in ethnographic reportage drawing

What is it about?

This is a practice-based research on reportage drawing in an ethnography context. In the paper I propose three key skills we need for this type of drawing practice: speed-drawing, recognition of subjectivity and appropriate use of visual conventions. I discuss how these skills are reflected in my own drawings and how they help me obtain ethnographic data I need.

Why is it important?

There is hardly any discussion on the specific skills required in reportage drawing practice. This paper chooses a specific area - drawing for ethnography - and breaks down the key drawing skills needed in this context, as well as analyses how the practitioner's skills influence data collected. This paper could inspire reportage drawing practitioners to reflect on their own practice and understand how their skills lead to what they create.
