What is it about?

Treatment studies for borderline personality disorder (BPD) have repeatedly demonstrated that therapies that are tailored for this diagnosis are superior to those which are not. Currently, gold standard treatments for BPD are highly demanding, lengthy, and specialized, leading to a critical gap between the supply and demand of effective treatment. Psychoeducation about BPD, which is a common component of most treatments known to be effective, is a low-cost, low-burden intervention proven to relieve symptoms. The present study builds on psychoeducation research, assessing online video prescriptions as a means of teaching patients what they need to know about their diagnosis and care.

Why is it important?

This study is important as it test a first step of mental healthcare for those who have borderline personality disorder to provide information that can empower further healthcare decision making regardless of access to specialized care for the disorder.

Perspectives

The treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD) has become legitimized as effective and recommended, but are too intensive and specialized for most clinicians to provide and for most patients to access. Providing feasible, scalable, and pragmatic building blocks of care to be standardized across different healthcare settings spanning primary care to mental health services will create more just distribution of much needed information to frame what people with BPD need to know to make good healthcare decisions.
