Tomatoes are susceptible to southern blight disease and may experience substantial yield losses. In this research, some beneficial rhizobacteria were employed to prevent southern blight disease and increase tomato yields.

Why is it important?

Southern blight pathogen uses oxalic acid to attack tomatoes. The rhizobacteria that inhibit oxalic acid production by the pathogen are considered perfect candidates for use as biocontrol agents in tomato southern blight disease management program. Although numerous rhizobacteria strains have so far been reported with potential application in tomato cultivation, a few of them possess oxalic acid-inhibiting abilities. This study reported the use of oxalic acid inhibiting rhizobacteria to control the southern blight disease in tomatoes.

Perspectives

These experiments were conducted to assess the positive impacts of promising rhizobacteria on tomato plant growth promotion, nutrient uptake, and biological control of Southern blight disease. The ultimate objective is to create rhizobacteria-based bioagents that effectively combat southern blight and increase tomato yields. These studies will aid in the transition away from conventional chemical agriculture in favour of environmentally friendly methods.
