What is it about?
We have derived two simplified two-variable nonlinear pacemaker cell models from popular Aliev-Panfilov and Corrado-modified Mitchell-Schaeffer cardiac excitable models and considered their single-cell and coupled dynamic properties. As application examples of combined pacemaker-excitable systems, we have demonstrated the results of simulations of the 2D sinoatrial node and 3D intestine tissue (including animation video).

Why is it important?
The development of patient-specific medicine and medical device testing requiring real-time computer simulations is of great interest. Such applications are usually based on simplified mathematical models of cells. The considered pacemaker variants of the Aliev-Panfilov and modified Mitchell-Schaeffer models can be used for computationally efficient electrophysiological modeling of tissues that include primary and subsidiary pacemaking cells, allowing the development of models for whole organs and various species.
