What is it about?

Pain education is very vital to the proper and prompt treatment of pain. We have shown that pain education given through an electronic platform can enhance the traditional learning methods and significantly increase the pain knowledge of medical students.

Why is it important?

This is the first study to explore the potential of an online approach to improve the knowledge of pain and its management in medical students studying at colleges of medicine located in an African LMIC. It also represents a novel effort to bridge the gap created by the absence of a standardized pain curricula in Nigeria. Findings from this study can encourage adaptation of similar e-learning platforms to other African LMICs requiring pain education in their medical colleges.

Perspectives

During the conduct this study, the students who participated were excited to learn about pain, with some considering a future career in pain medicine. I hope this study provides good evidence for policymakers in the tertiary education sector and institutional heads in the colleges of medicine to explore adoption of this approach to support pain education.
