What is it about?
The patenting activity of firms can be used to track their innovation strategies to improve production lines or to introduce new products in the market. In this work, we investigate the patent portfolios of about 70000 companies and we compute a measure of their coherent diversification. In this assessment, for each firm we count the number of different technological sectors and how much such sectors are related to each other. In this way, we reward those firms that patent in closely related fields. We find that our measure is a good predictor of the economic performance of companies.
