What is it about?

We investigated the effect of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on the heart size and pumping function using MRI of the heart in over 1600 post-menopausal women from the UK Biobank cohort study.

Why is it important?

HRT effects on heart health remain uncertain. This study provides evidence that HRT was not associated with changes in heart size and function that would suggest any negative effect. In fact, as the left chamber of the heart and the left pre-chamber of the heart were smaller, this suggests beneficial effects on heart health.

Perspectives

This study suggests that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has beneficial effects on heart size and function. Further research is needed to assess whether these findings lead to a lower risk of developing heart attacks, heart failure and strokes.
