What is it about?

We know that core self-evaluations, such as self-esteem and resilience, can impact employee well-being. In this study, we showed that CSE indeed positively relates to work engagement. In addition, we show that there are three mechanisms through which CSE can enhance work engagement: via perceptions of job resources, via job crafting, and via career competencies.

Why is it important?

Our study is important because it adds to our knowledge of mechanisms through which personality can enhance well-being. From a practical perspective, it shows that individuals with high core self-evaluations can enhance their engagement at work via proactive behavior (i.e., job crafting) and via career development (i.e., career competencies).

Perspectives

The nice thing about this study is that it shows that personality can relate positively to being engaged at work, but that this relationship needs to be "activated" first via proactive crafting one's job and developing career competencies.
