What is it about?

We know that, for the majority of the population, there is a dose response relationship between exercise intensity and health benefits - in general, the higher the intensity the greater the benefits. But when we prescribe exercise intensity to someone as part of a training programme we tend to use a 'one-size-fits all' approach instead of taking into consideration factors such as a person's fitness level, age, gender, resting metabolism etc. This study aimed to create a new way to individually prescribe exercise at a specific intensity.

Why is it important?

We created an equation that can be used to prescribe stepping exercise to females of difference ages. By considering the individual's age, the stair/step height that they have available to them, and the intensity you want them to exercise at, this equation will tell you how fast (what cadence) you should step at. This could make high intensity exercise safer for older and/or inactive females.
