What is it about?

Urban life can increase the rates of mental disorders among dwellers. This article describes basic findings on the mental disorders of inhabitants of the largest metropolitan area in South America. We have shown that anxiety and mood disorders were most prevalent conditions. Significant association with urban violence was found.

Why is it important?

On next decades, most world population will live in large urban areas. São Paulo metropolitan area can serve as model to understand the relationship between urban living and mental disorders.

Perspectives

More than 20 million people live in this large urban area around 2007. The living conditions are stressors to mental health. The findings of high rate of mental disorders are red flag to government and policy makers to find solutions for this scenario.
