What is it about?
When two people interact, their facial expressions often become coordinated. This study investigates whether these moment-to-moment patterns in facial expressions can provide information about the quality of a marital relationship. We analyzed facial expressions extracted automatically from video recordings of married couples during face-to-face conversations. We then examined how patterns of facial coordination changed throughout the conversation and whether these patterns were related to relationship quality.

Why is it important?
Relationship quality is usually assessed through questionnaires. While questionnaires provide valuable information, they may not fully capture what happens between partners as they interact. Our study shows that facial expressions can provide another source of information about a relationship. By examining how partners’ facial expressions become coordinated during a conversation, we found patterns that were related to relationship quality. This approach could complement traditional questionnaires and help us better understand how relationship dynamics unfold during real interactions.
