What is it about?

Menstruating girls require school environments that are supportive and girl-friendly, enabling them to manage menstrual hygiene easily and comfortably within the school compound. This study examines how school-based menstrual hygiene management, along with water and sanitation programs, empowers female students.

Why is it important?

The findings indicate that school-based menstrual hygiene management, water and sanitation interventions targeting the hygiene behaviors of menstruating girls have the potential to enhance their hygiene practices within the school compound, increase self-confidence, support overall health (including social, emotional, and physical components), and reduce class absenteeism related to menstrual hygiene.

Perspectives

The lack of strong evidence on the impact of school hygiene, water, and sanitation (WASH) interventions on menstruating girls has posed a challenge for WASH program professionals and organizations involved in implementing school-based initiatives. This intervention based research article provides valuable evidence for WASH program implementers and influence decision-makers to prioritize improved budgeting for school WASH programs.
