What is it about?

Ketamine, known for its quick effects in treating depression, also comes with some side effects. Our preclinical study took a closer look at two versions of ketamine, S-ketamine and R-ketamine, to understand which is safer for long-term treatment, mirroring the clinical application of ketamine.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that repeated treatment with S-ketamine led to stronger behavioral changes compared to R-ketamine, suggesting that R-ketamine may be the safer option for long-term use.

Perspectives

Our study contributes additional preclinical evidence indicating that R-ketamine could be a safer option for antidepressant medication when compared to S-ketamine. Clinical trials involving R-ketamine are needed to validate these preclinical results.
