What is it about?

In practice, many employees say they like to work from home. Until recently the scientific debate about the pros and cons for organizations was unresolved. How is the performance of the workforce related with the places where people work, its built environment, building engineering, and facility management? This study details the positive influence on work quality, health, and well-being of 12,776 employees of a biobank.

Why is it important?

The study demonstrates that the places where employees work have a significant impact on their concerns, quality of work, and health; and that working from home has benefits. In a wider context, the study also shows that the built environment, workplaces, and related facilities are crucial factors in advancing people’s health and well-being; and, when chosen well, these factors allow employees to function and perform well for the organizations in which they work.

Perspectives

Studying the impact of the built environment and related facilities on people and organizations is not only important and highly relevant; it is also great fun to do. The study results also have wider implications for employees, organizations, and management and for the facility management, built environment, real estate, and design industries.
