What is it about?

This review looks at how Virtual Reality (VR) is used to study prejudice. We examine how VR has been used to understand intergroup attitudes, bias, and prejudice, and whether VR interventions can effectively reduce prejudice. We also compare the advantages and limitations of using VR compared to traditional methods. We only included studies that used VR to interact with members of different groups or embody an outgroup member. The review of 64 studies shows that VR contact has the potential to improve intergroup relations, but there are cases where it can actually increase prejudice. We discuss these findings based on different perspectives and minority groups studied. We also analyze factors that may influence the outcomes. Finally, we address important theoretical and methodological issues related to using VR to reduce prejudice.

Why is it important?

This systematic review holds significant importance as it is the first-ever publication to comprehensively summarize all the previously published work on the topic. By consolidating the existing literature in the field, this review serves as a comprehensive resource that brings together the collective knowledge and findings regarding the use of Virtual Reality (VR) in studying prejudice and its reduction. It provides a foundational understanding of the current state of research in this area, paving the way for further advancements and discoveries in the field of prejudice reduction using VR. nderstanding and addressing prejudice is crucial for promoting equality, inclusivity, and social harmony. By investigating the effectiveness of VR interventions in reducing prejudice, we can potentially discover new ways to foster empathy, understanding, and positive intergroup relations. Additionally, examining the advantages and limitations of VR compared to traditional methods provides valuable insights into the field of prejudice research and informs future study designs.
